A Mobile Stroke Unit designed and manufactured by EXCELLANCE, Inc. of Madison, AL is being delivered to a top academic medical center in Ohio. This ground-breaking new unit, built with a generous donation from the Maltz Family of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, was designed to cut down on the time it takes to diagnose a stroke so that life-saving clot-busting drugs can be administered quickly.
New on-board technology includes a mobile CT scanner and a telemedicine unit that enables immediate communication between the Emergency Vehicle staff and hospital physicians.
The custom-built all-aluminum ambulance module is mounted on a 4-door Freightliner chassis designed especially for emergency service. An exterior-mounted rear-vision camera offers the driver with a view behind the ambulance to reduce backing accidents and an on-board diesel generator provides electrical power for medical equipment. The vehicle also includes a hydraulic leveling system to ensure accurate scanning while parked on uneven surfaces.
With increased concern for ambulance safety being foremost, the patient compartment was designed with occupant safety in mind. High-back seats with additional restraints provide seating for several medical staff to treat patients while remaining secured in the seats.
To counteract weather extremes, additional capacity air conditioning and heating systems were installed to maintain a temperate climate in the ambulance while on the road or even when parked.
The President/CEO of EXCELLANCE, Charlie Epps, states, “We are recognized in our industry for building the safest, most durable emergency vehicles available.
